The Iceland story really is amazing.
After the Thierry Henry double handball last time cheating Ireland out of a place in the Euro's I'm going to be rooting for them (sorry Bjorn).

For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Fuck the Swedes. World Cup Qualifying is stupid, not enough European teams.Hastur wrote:
Happy to see Sweden qualify for the World Cup next year in Russia. We won 1-0 on aggregate after a goalless match last night against Italy at the San Siro, Milan. Italy will not be at a World Cup finals for the first time since 1958.
No Italy? The World Cup is ruined. The best 32 teams should play, this every region of the world should be represented shit is so gay.
Go 7-2-1 in qualifying, and it's not good enough? Seriously what the fuck is that?
Fuck this World Cup and the horse it rode in on.

A contest is held where everyone knows the rules.
Your team loses despite everyone thinking it is a sure thing.
You don't like the result so you want to change the system.
Where have I heard that before?

The system should have been changed long ago, this outcome is only a small reason why they should change it. It's stupid that shitty teams get to qualify for the World Cup over clearly superior teams, just because of the region of the world that they happen to play in.Montegriffo wrote:So let me get this right.StCapps wrote:Fuck the Swedes. If you think otherwise, it's because you like good teams to beat up on shitty teams in the world cup, so fuck you. The World Cup should have the best teams in the world playing for it, this regional quota shit is hot garbage. If you go 7-2-1 in a tough group with European teams and some other team goes 4-3-3 and makes it beating up on shitty Asian teams then, that's just stupid, on it's face. Syria and Honduras went 3-4-3 and might still qualify, yet Italy is out? Fucking horseshit.

Re: International sports bar
That doesn't mean the rules aren't stupid. 3-4-3 teams having a shot at qualifying while a 7-2-1 team doesn't because of the region of the world that they play in and getting stuck in a group with Spain? Dumb.Montegriffo wrote:Sounds a little bit like butthurt to me.
It's hard to have more idiotic rules for qualification than that, let's be real. World Cup qualifying has been stupid as far back as I can remember, and this result is a great example that shows the stupidity of the system. No more regional quota's, ditch that shit and let the best teams play, if you want to let one shitty team in, have them be the hosts, otherwise fuck subsidizing shitty teams in regions of the world that suck at soccer.

If one region comes to completely dominate a sport, like, say Basketball, then the "world championship" would be meaningless to the rest of the world. It would be the NBA regular season.StCapps wrote:The system should have been changed long ago, this outcome is only a small reason why they should change it. Kinda makes sense to include other areas, even if they'll lose. Same as the Olympics - which really make the World Cup irrelevant anyway. Yet, somehow, we need 12-13 "world championships" per decade, because people eat it up, I guess.

Making sure that some of the best teams don't qualify, that makes the World Cup more irrelevant than if they subsidize the shitty soccer teams.GrumpyCatFace wrote:If one region comes to completely dominate a sport, like, say Basketball, then the "world championship" would be meaningless to the rest of the world. Sorry but if Asian teams can't learn to play soccer, then they shouldn't have a spot in the World Cup while a vastly superior European team sits on the sidelines because of the shitty qualification rules, that de-legitimatizes the World Cup more than anything else. The best teams should be in the tournament, to claim some other format makes it a more legitimate World Cup, asinine. Other formats lead to shittier soccer, and more great teams beating up on shitty teams in the group stage, that does not make the product better, it makes it worse.
Let's let in teams that have no chance of winning, and leave out a team that wins more than most teams, genius.

But the best teams ARE in the cup. Just not "all of the best teams".StCapps wrote:Making sure that some of the best teams don't qualify, that makes the World Cup more irrelevant than if they subsidize the shitty soccer teams.GrumpyCatFace wrote:If one region comes to completely dominate a sport, like, say Basketball, then the "world championship" would be meaningless to the rest of the world. If they're that much better, then they'll win it anyway (assuming that talent has anything to do with the result, and not just a single, lucky kick in that dumbass sport).
What motivation do the Asian teams have to compete, if they're miles behind the Euros, with no chance to qualify? Why would they bother? They'd just focus on their Asian leagues, and ignore it. If you want to promote worldwide soccer (for whatever reason), this is a good way to do so.
