I think that was Paraguay. Similar to Peru in that getting actual democracy took a long time. So if they are burning government buildings, it is understandable.TheReal_ND wrote:Can't remember if it was Peru or Paraguay but they just had an extremely rich president get elected for the third(?) time, after getting the laws that got him elected again rammed through congress. They set their congressional hall on fire in protest.

You yourself said that comparing Peru to America is goofy, then you went on to do exactly that; therefore (your being authority) have defined yourself as goofy--I agree.
What's all this "dirt poor" crap anyway? Compared to Venezuela, Peru is rocking! You can buy a live chicken, straight from the jungle, have it plucked, butchered, cooked and served for two or three soles, and wash it down with pisca punch. Dirt poor--agrarian--third world--all racist terms as far as I'm concerned--but they don't seem to give a shit.

jbird4049 wrote:Peru is a fairly conventional free market economy and parliamentary democracy system. Which is one of the reasons I studied it. It's successful now because of it's low corruption, effective government, and policies that benefit the poorer majority.C-Mag wrote:Continuing to say Communism will work if it's done right is goofy.

One of the purposes of political economics is to compare different countries, or any society really, and to find out what makes one work, and what doesn't. Despite having more resources, more development economically in roads, bridges, actually cities, and so, Venezuela is doing very poorly when compared to Peru. Actually it's falling apart.
One country is doing well, despite its relative lack of resources (fishing is one of the main sources of income), and the other country, despite its greater resources is falling apart. This interest me. It has value in showing how a society can function, or not, on how social cohesion, social values, institutions, and governance can determine results.

Political economics is a euphemism for neo-marxism. You must have drank the koolaid in your macro econ 101 course.

Strangelove, I fail to see how studying something is neon-Marxism. I suppose reaching conclusions after I study the facts is doubleplus ungood? Perhaps, like some Marxists, and Libertarians, believe, one should have the correct answer, than change the facts to meet this approved truth?Speaker to Animals wrote:Political economics is a euphemism for neo-marxism. Having a different answers, beliefs, or viewpoints, is good, for we all need such to get closer to an approximation of the truth, whatever it is. I depend on others to help me in this search. Mindfucking oneself however, to reach a supposed truth through theoretical reasoning rather than empirically is not.
BTW, thanks for the snark rather than responding to my actual explanations.

Political economics is literally a rebranding of marxism. It's also called marxian analytics.

I could also have substituted the term "political science" and kept the rest of it the same.Speaker to Animals wrote:Political economics is literally a rebranding of marxism. It's also called marxian analytics.
As for "dialectics the post", it's still snark about a label in the post and nothing about the post.

A very good piece on life of security officers behind the scenes. These men and women do the daily dirty work for Maduro and they are getting tired of it.

Maduro is losing his grip on the country.“I feel exhausted from it all: the lack of sleep, the constant barrage of stones and Molotovs,” said Gustavo, a 21-year-old national guardsman, adding he has to keep performing riot duty despite a leg injury from a broken bottle thrown by a protester. “We’re being used as cannon fodder.”
Officers stopped giving time off in Gustavo’s barracks after 18 guardsmen deserted during the last break last month, he said.
Guardsman Juan, 21 years old, said he has been getting up at 4 a.m. daily in his barracks outside Caracas for the past month. He gets a boiled carrot or a potato for breakfast and is sent out to protest duty, sometimes until near midnight. Back at the barracks, dinner sometimes consists of a plain corn patty known as an arepa. On a lucky day, there will be butter.................................
“This is a war of attrition,” said Luis García, a student activist who has been at the forefront of the protests. “Whoever tires first will lose.”
“One day I will step aside and just walk away, blend into the city,” she said. “No average officers support this government anymore.”-Venzuelan Security Officer
