Women actually had jewelry before we even had stone buildings. That should tell you everything about who actually controlled the species.

Jewellery was a very important marker of social status, and most prosperous women probably wore some conspicuous pieces all the time, or at least whenever outside the home. Men were often at least equally highly adorned, and high-status children of both sexes often wore jewellery as formal wear.

Lets also not leave out the fact that women tend to be more aesthetically inclined than men. So if you divide the "creative/openness to experience" domain into aesthetics and interest in ideas you see statistically that women are temperamentally more into artistic things than men in general. And obviously jewelry is aesthetic. I would add that beauty is something not so useless, or something to flippantly disregard. Its one of the things that makes living worthwhile. Hunter and gathers having jewelry doesn't = women are materialistic. It = women are into art, prettiness, beauty. And everyone knows this from your own experience. Its at least partially the reason they are more inclined towards interior design/remodeling, fashion design, jewelry design, etc. than men. Its why they decide what color the rooms will be painted in your homes around the country etc. etc.
