See, the problem here is that one side of the argument is so staggeringly stupid that there really is no argument to be had. Anti-gun folks have no solution. Anti-gun folks have implemented their non-solutions since the inception of the 2nd Amendment and have continuously failed to stop gun homicide. At the very minimum, we should be having more conversations about mental health, instead of shoving the problem under the rug. No sane person wants to commit mass murder. There have to be signs. If we remove the stigma attached to seeking mental health, it would go a long way.

You'd have to ask somebody like DrY to be sure, but I doubt there are always warning signs.

First of all that's not the problem under discussion. Mass shootings by the mentally ill using high powered (trigger warning) assault rifles is what needs to be discussed.

Sure you will never get all the guns out of America. I've never even suggested that. What you could do though is try to reduce the number of these military style weapons in circulation. You could try to restrict the amount of ammunition it's possible to buy. You could have metal detectors in public places to make it harder to move large arsenals into them. You could restrict access to guns for the mentally ill.
None of these suggestions are going to be foolproof and at the end of the day they will not stop every maniac but every time one of these events happen the response is always "nothing can be done" . I don't believe that nothing can be done, I do believe that many people don't even want to try though.
