"Stay calm" is not the same sentiment as "nothing to see here." It is useful to decouple them.

I'm not seeing how I am accepting of failure, to wit defeatist

I was an elite soldier, crushed a standard which would defeat the average man on the street

I was an extrovert, life of the party, I was always the guy who got the girls

then I made a private life for myself which is enviable by any bourgeois standards

I think Farmer got it right: the danger isn’t so much the change from American liberty to European liberty; considering the Nouveau aristocracy’s nepotism over merit, that may be inevitable; no, the real danger lies in overshooting to Communism, or a vengeful reactionary backlash.

The best we can do is refuse to lie for either side.
