Here's some pop commentary.

Gangster Rap makes me think of James Frazer - I think it was James Frazer, at least - talking about how the most successful shaman or witch doctor isn't going to be a true believer. Authenticity becomes an opportunity cost.

Like, Doc Watson got his version of Streets of Laredo from a guy who spent time in prison. But, I can't remember that dudes name because he spent his time doing dumb shit and getting thrown in prison, while Doc Watson spent his time becoming one of the best guitarists ever - as good as Merle Travis at Travis picking, as good a flat-picker as Norman Blake or Tony Rice, and a killer clawhammer player as well.
