Yeah, in hindsight the casting was a little ironic. John Wayne was a big softy who played hard asses. Jimmy Stewart was a bad ass bomber pilot who played softies.

I seem to recall he was quite explicit in the WW1 series. Describing how craters would turn into lakes of mud that would suck down soldiers even as their buddies tried to pull them out, or had to leave them screaming when they couldn't.

That was one of the more memorable parts of the series.
