I'm reminded of this podcast I heard a while back.

A man gets a knock on his door, opens it up and it's the local HOA representative. He's a renter though. HOA rep says to him, "Hello sir, we're signing up people to help clean up any garbage there is around the community, and help plant trees to beautify the area."

Guy is like "Fuck no I don't want to help you, if there's less garbage and the place is prettier, and property values go up, then my rent goes up."

Slams the door on the HOA rep.

Fucking boot 'em.

You have one interest group, the dbtreks of the world, who don't give two shits about min wage earners, nor about rent going up. But these people vote, and people sympathetic to these people vote. The fight for 15 people won the argument. And still people, like DBtrek, are offering no concessions or compromise. So the voting populace will do what they can do without them. People like DBtrek will never come to the table though, he's just angry that sawant is threatening his job opportunities. He can't see this isn't happening in a vacuum. Not everyone agrees with all that the socialist is about, but at least she's offering some remedy that they're not otherwise getting.

Feel free to ignore large swathes of the voting public, then bitch when people elect someone who represents their interest.
