Public transport on the continent is fantastic. Clean, cheap and on time. Of course they are heavily subsidised by govt so no good 'cos socialism.

Yet its subway system, the actual subject of the thread, is only 40 years old.

As we may say about the US budget, it's all about priorities and politics, who pays and who gets paid. It's hard to get anything done when sweetheart Union contracts require anything to cost 10 times more than it would cost anywhere else.

I've ridden the tram in Sweden, the subway in Germany, the train in France, of course the tube in Britain. Also: Japan, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, China, and more. In the U.S., I’ve ridden a lot of trains, trams & buses in NYC, plus BART & MAX. Super-sucky.

I guess it's the ones I haven't ridden that are good.
