Re: WVa School Strike (first since 1990)
I notice the quality of teachers isn’t anywhere on your list of ills contributing to US education. As usual, the results of their teaching (poor), has nothing to do with them. Rather they are given bad kids, in large quantities, with insufficient resources, and so on, and so on. Teaching seems to be the teenager of professions, what with every failure originating from outside sources and never with themselves.
Yet the rest of us (taxpayers), are dropping $16k per child to obtain the same test scores that Hungary achieves for $6k per student. We’re tired of the excuse game. We’re tired of the obvious fraud and waste. We’re tired of hearing how people who work maybe eight months out of the year (taking Summer vacation, Winter break, Spring break, every Federal holiday, and bonus teachers in-service days) have it so damn hard.
What we want is for them to do their jobs. We’re paying them nearly 3x the Hungarian rate per student for the same result. Either bring those rookie test scores up, or find a job you’re good at, teachers. But for Gods sake, have enough dignity as an adult human being to stop blaming everything but yourselves for our students sucking at academics.
There may be many factors contributing to poor student performance, but when teachers are always conspicuously absent from that list it becomes difficult to take the rest of the complaints seriously.

All I am saying is that its kind of ironic the places without teachers' unions are usually the places with the worst education. It's like the talent moves away from that place once they lose the right to negotiate rises and such, etc....

I started to mark this paper, but I'm currently working on negotiating a rise. And such. You are right to say that education in this nation has many problems but some like to lay them all at teachers and/or their unions' feet. Like somehow that will just instantly cure everything. It seems that the people who bitch the most about schools tend to be the ones who want decrease funds, get rid of the teacher's union, and then gloat (maybe not the most accurate word) about public schools the most. Personally, I find that these people are creating more problems since they refuse to even listen to other ideas. I am not against private schools, parochial schools, homeschooling, etc... but overall there are many issues that we as a nation have to work together and there is no quick and easy, one remedy for the problems.GloryofGreece wrote:Your the one making strawmans and putting words in my posts. Your statements are a little hyperbolic, right? Just a bit..."since you said this then certainly you mean we should just have home schooling" etc. etc.
In case wondering (but your not) our nation's education issues are not monolithic or caused by one thing. Its a multifaceted problem. With tons of variables and lots of things at play. Funding isn't the issue or a primary issue. The culture of the kids (our nation overall), the home life of the kids, the class sizes, the amount of teachers, and building school by school administration are just a few of the actual problems when you talk about education.

Are anti-teacher union people really refusing to “listen to other ideas”, or do the Unions simply propose the same failed ideas every time?
Have we never raised taxes for education? Have we never given teachers raises? Have we never paid more for reducing class size?
Or have we done these things over and over and over for decades, until we’re paying $16k apiece for our students to get the same shitty education here that they can get in Hungary for $6k?
