The Italians used to make the best westerns. If somebody wants to take on American war movies, then they need to look at how the Spaghetti Westerns did it.

Please, the Italians have no chance, it was all Clint Eastwood, without Eastwood those movies are unwatchable.

Nobody has a chance against America, America doesn't have to get it right everytime, all America has to do is hit one out of ten, but when that one is Sergeant Barnes or Colonel Kilgore? It's over, game, set, and match.

Once Upon a Time in the West is a good Leone movie. That one didnt have Eastwood. Its been awhile since I saw it.

Henry Fonda, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson, nuff said.

Leone worked for Hollywood, those weren't Italian movies, they were American movies shot in Italy.

You know what, I actually did like Spirited Away. Thats one of the few anime type movies thats not completely gay. But you guys are sort of proving my point. You can point to like half a dozen movies coming out of a continent with several billion people over many decades. Im not defending the American movie Industry. It mostly produces awful shit like remakes and comic book stuff. But, there are plenty of talented American directors that steer clear of the dumb stuff. Go onto youtube and watch a trailer for a popular chinese movie. Its quite sad. And it irritates me that we pander to this demographic and have consistently lowered our standards in the hope that some Chinese censor will let the Great Wall get shown at Mao theater.

Maybe foreign devils can make better art house flicks, maybe foreign devils can make better cartoons, but foreign devils do not make better war movies, on the agregate, it's not even a contest. Even liquid spray cheese like Top Gun is better than 99% of foreign war movies.

I can say Australians make great war movies, but in reality, they've only actually made two great ones; two, does not a career make.

3 great non American war films off the top of my head

One great war film about insurgency warfare is "Battle of Algiers". Quite current. And well shows how both sides work in a urban guerilla setting.

If one hasn't seen it, it's one really good war film about Europeans fighting an insurgency in a Muslim country.

Except all three of those movies were cheese, Top Gun with Tommies instead of Tom Cruise, none of those three movies are in a class with Platoon, Apocalypse Now, and Saving Private Ryan, so get real.

The greatest British War movie, was Hope and Glory, that was a great one, best British movie of all time actually.
