As opposed to a bankrupt client state? They're bankrupt because they can't offer bonds, like states do.
What is the point of giving them statehood though? I'm all for cutting them loose entirely, should have been done a long time ago. I don't see what value they add to our country atm. I don't think they will get statehood, but if they did, nothing good would come out of it.

We couldn't get Cuba so we settled with PR for a base. That's really the only reason why this is even a discussion.

No point, I suppose, but it expands our territory and resources. Pretty much the point of any empire.

I've done OK on real estate.

Prices in PR have been dropping for awhile, and if this goes through and there's a cash infusion + greater security + the rest of what statehood would offer, it's not like the U.S. has a ton of tropical paradises as competition.
