That picture was of Sir Lancelot, not Sir Galahad, and the Grail Knights were some five centuries before the crusades.

The Pope should retort: "We'll leave the saying sorry to the Canadians, they'll say it enough for both parties no matter how much they are to blame and doubly so if they are even a little at fault, so no need to be redundant."
And made a little jab or three:
"So, how's that aboriginal suicide rate coming along? Still the highest in the world? You don't say. I saw a documentary on the Highway of Tears; any new leads on those cases? How about the missing one thousand indigenous women in Ottawa?"
"She had yellow hair and she walked funny and she made a noise like... O my God, please don't kill me! "

Let me bold the most head-scratcher-iffic part.

"Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has a request for Pope Francis: say sorry for the role of the Catholic Church in a Canadian school system . . ."

The Pope is apologizing to Canada for what, again?
For what transpired in the Canadian school system?
Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo - kay.
Probably says "..a Canadian school system" rather than "the Canadian school system" for a reason, you know?

One might presume they already apologized for the Canadian government at the time handing the kids over to private religious schools, and if not.... then they indeed are what you seem to imply in your OP - hypocritical.

Not that that means that Trudeau has any business demanding an apology. As the article states, the CC has already apologized for something very similar, so you know they don't condone that sort of thing anymore. Your likely misunderstanding, aside, you're not wrong about that part. It was still the Canadian government that handed over those children, and the CC was doing what everyone else at the time thought of as the normal and acceptable thing to do. And if they want to make it right, they simply need to round up any politicians, social workers, school teachers and priests who worked those schools aimed at destroying native culture back then, and punish them to the satisfaction of the children and parents wronged.

And Fife: There's quite a bit of difference between modern day blacks whining about wrongs committed to ancestors of theirs two centuries ago versus people who suffered injustices by the state in recent history, where the people who were wronged still live.

If your government took your kids away to protect them from your savage and uncivilized customs, and handed them over to a religious Islamic, Pashtun religious school, you and your kids might - you know - get a little resentful about that down the line. Or at least, one might hope you or they would.

Yes, if there's one thing we can count on, it's that the CC apologizing signals a change in policy. Surely, they don't condone such things any more.

In 2008, the Church asserted that the scandal was a very serious problem, but at the same time, estimated that it was "probably caused by 'no more than 1 per cent' (or about 5,000) of the around 410,000 Roman Catholic priests worldwide.[32] The overwhelming majority (approximately 80%) of reported cases of sexual abuse of minors occurred in the United States.
It's only 1% anyway. That's like 4,100 pedophiles.
