“It’s not fun to watch when you go through your whole pitching staff and wind up bringing a utility infielder in to pitch,” Joe Torre told Yahoo. “As much as it’s nice to talk about being at an 18-inning game, it takes time.”
But why?
Pace of game and ever babying of pitchers. Second is too much, why not first by the last batter from the previous inning? Or start the count at 1-0. It doesn't thrill me either but 18 innings between two sub .500 teams in the middle of August is a little silly. Kill it come Sept. 1 when rosters expand so it doesn't effect pennant races. And I could live with it.
