That's the trick, though. You're assuming people naturally don't want totalitarianism. I disagree.Speaker to Animals wrote:In fact, it's the same kind of mindset the nazis possessed when they decided to burn dangerous books. A bit ironic, really. I've come to the conclusion that given a choice between democracy or republics and totalitarianism, people will choose totalitarianism if they're certain their in-group (be that inner circle, community, or ethic or religious group) will be the favored one. America "worked" as a democratic republic for so long because it was a democracy for white Europeans, the unquestionable majority of the population, and everyone else not that could eat shit and like it. The more not-white European descended groups started gaining more and more political power, the more traditional power holders began to decide maybe democracy should go away if keeping it means losing the unquestioned dominant voice in the power dynamic.
Expanding the concept of "white" to incorporate Irish, Italian, Jewish, and various Eastern European ethnicities to keep the group the undeniable majority helped alleviate this somewhat for a while, but now we're seeing what happens when even that megabloc begins to lose the demographics market share in a population.
"Old World Blues.' It refers to those so obsessed with the past they can't see the present, much less the future, for what it is. They stare into the what-was...as the realities of their world continue on around them." -Fallout New Vegas

Prior to 1965 we were actually crafting our immigration policy to keep America white. And they weren't wrong for it because I think on some level you are correct.

What makes our civilization a bit difference is the forced division of power and the factional conflict that made totalitarianism difficult to maintain longterm.

This is a little known fact, and could possibly explain the downward trajectory of social intercourse since then. (Using "white" in a social sense rather than skin color.)TheReal_ND wrote:Prior to 1965 we were actually crafting our immigration policy to keep America white. Conflating republican government with democracy is a trap. Accepting that democracy is in opposition to totalitarianism is also a trap.Speaker to Animals wrote:I think you might be right about that.KerningChameleon wrote:That's the trick, though. The kind of totalitarianism we have now is a direct perversion of our institutions and culture by Marxists in guise of "democracy." The early twentieth century fuckers like Wilson and Holmes really did us in.
