This is how your rule the waves, not by fighting for them, simply by ruling them with presence, so that things never escalate to the point of a shoot out in the first place.
Welp, no need to load the guns then. Just launch inflatable aircraft carriers ad infinitum and lower my fucking taxes.

The deal with the Soviets was the same then as it is now - MAD. No matter how many goofy submarine games we played, the equation was never changed.

Obviously the cop on the beat needs to have his gun and its needs to be loaded, but it doesn't have to be drawn and fired for him to police the beat by showing presence, being aware, and nipping things in the bud before they ever escalate.

MAD, or mutual vulnerability, was entirely related to the domination of the seas and the silent war between the submarines, MAD is only in effect, if their submarines are held in check, the land based ICBM's are the last desperate gambit of nuclear deterrence, the strong deterrent hand, starts up in the saddle behind Crazy Ivan in his baffles, ensuring that the ICBM's on the Great Plains, are a doomsday weapon which never has to answer the bell.

The opposite is actually the case, 99% of seapower is presence, only 1% is actually using torpedoes.
Meh... we've got 2-10x the naval presence of any other first world nation. It hasn't been useful since Vietnam.

I mean, we could send an attack submarine after some Somali pirates, but it wouldn't change the situation much. Tomahawks looked cool as fuck blowing up Baghdad, but some nice fireworks would have accomplished the same.

At this point, the US Navy is so OP as to become comic relief, and little more.

Ok, but did you see the price on those carriers? wow, it's a nice business. Who cares about naval power? Let's make some more money, and some F35 too!

PS: finally I got that avatar stuff working. :-)

Man, what a sad thing. We knew those guys. It was really a catastrophe! Some of them were flying for the first time. Horrible thing.
Let's leave it at that.
