I just don't understand why people bring up automobile fatalities when it comes to gun regulation, unless they are recommending a federal regulatory and licensing apparatus with reach into every state's gun laws.

It is either that, an intentional red herring, or a lack of understanding.

Because next to knives they are the only other thing in the US that people own more than one of, statistically that can be considered a weapon by even liberal thought processes.

'Statistically considered a weapon' is a phrase that I am having trouble with.

Why? Define what a knife is. Are we talking butter knives, steak knives, chef knives, exotic knives, etc?

The point was: changing the subject to cars doesn't make a lot of sense because we already regulate cars and highways for safety, and work at reducing automobile fatalities. You can't really ask, 'why are people worried about guns and not cars' since people are worried about cars.

In fact, all of the worrying about car safety is why car manufacturers are constantly advertising their safety innovations. When an arms manufacture tried a safety innovation with owner recognition built into the gun, everyone freaked out.

As long as the answer to society's ills is government restricting the freedom of citizens (as the political apparently left believes) we certainly should.
Anything deemed "dangerous" to yourself or others should be banned. Fast food, alcohol, tobacco, motorcycles, gay sex, etc.
