More public restrooms with needle disposal boxes could drastically reduce most of those issues, a solution I brought up, nobody responded to it, I guess it doesn’t capture the imagination like “let em freeze” or whatever.doc_loliday wrote:Pages of complaints about needles, smashed glass, shit, urine, trash, and terrible smells, followed by offers of compromise turns into "you just don't want to look at the poor homeless".

What if we housed drug addicts in rehab clinics? You know.. actually solve the problem in the first place? Treat addiction as a disease. Help people get clean of drugs. Get them off the streets causing trouble. Remove the demand for drugs.
Crazy, I know.

It’s a good idea, in Oregon we have those, a lot of times it’s a requirement for addicted parents in custody cases, or for people arrested for drug possession as part of plea bargains or what not. Seems to work where I live, lot of “treatment” women staying clean.Speaker to Animals wrote:What if we housed drug addicts in rehab clinics? You know.. actually solve the problem in the first place? Sorry I didnt see your post about needle boxes. Also I'm not sure who said to let them freeze, thats pretty inhumane, I would like for these people to become contributing members of society.
Anyway, I'm onboard with the idea. I'm very much open to any idea that reduces the waste related to their lifestyle, and following them and installing biohazard boxes seems like a no brainer. Its already being done in San Francisco, where they get filled very quickly. We just need more of them, hundreds more if we really want to make the city safe again.
I'm also on board with bathrooms. Portapotties are probably the only real solution though and we would need them on the corners and alleys and in the parks if we are serious about getting the shit and urine off the streets.
I think these are temporary solutions, but the waste problem needs attention now and cant wait for a long term plan.
Ultimately we need to stop enabling them, which is what we're doing and its an opinion I hold based on the testimonies of ex addicts.

It's all good until the not my tax dollars crew start bitching about the cost of portapotties. Are you going to have to prove you are incapable before you can have a shit?doc_loliday wrote:JohnDonne wrote:More public restrooms with needle disposal boxes could drastically reduce most of those issues, a solution I brought up, nobody responded to it, I guess it doesn’t capture the imagination like “let em freeze” or whatever.doc_loliday wrote:Pages of complaints about needles, smashed glass, shit, urine, trash, and terrible smells, followed by offers of compromise turns into "you just don't want to look at the poor homeless".

One way or another you are going to have to spend money to alleviate the problems which leads to resentment from those who pay the bill.
Maybe the Dead Kennedys were right when they wrote *kill the poor".
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

Yet this approach has been tried and failed to yield results. How long mus we try the same thing and fail before realizing that it isn't working?Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:It is possible that people try harder when they aren't hopeless, and can actually see a path to improving their lives.

... and how is populating a city with porta-poties equipped with needle boxes *not* enabling them?
All fun and games till a kid with a small bladder has to pee in public and finds a dead junkie or steps on a used needle. That's what will fix the problem. Thousands of little shoot-up shitters scattered throughout the city.
Good lord.

Well I'm one of those bitching about the cost. But its either that or living in a city smells like urine and shit. You'll never forget the first time an addict takes a nice big liquid shit right in front of you and smiles.
It ain't the poor. Nothin' wrong with being poor. We created an environment that draws in the drug addicts from all over the country, enable their addiction and then call anyone that wants to actually help stop them a heartless monster. But I'm with the ex addicts, we really need to stop enabling them. They are my countrymen, as debased as their situation is, and tough love is sometimes required.

It is enabling them, but when a real solution is politically impossible, I have to settle for this.

Oh, liberals want to talk about "compassion"? They can talk to the Dr. Phil face, then.
