Here's my theory on people like him and the tipping point a society reaches where there are too many of them to survive.

Ten thousand years ago, he would have lived in a society so closely knit that the rest of his tribe would have noticed the evil inside him and would have either exiled him from the tribe, or simply just killed him.

A thousand years ago he wouldn't have been able to hide.

Five hundred years ago he would have been found out.

It's only in super complex disconnected modern societies that cancerous people like him can persist within a society in large numbers.

If in rough water, and the thing is flooding because your wife scuttled it, and you cannot stabilize it because she also sabotaged the paddle, then there is a fair chance you are going to drown.

Not 100%, but not remote either. Definitely not a practical joke.

I have long been of the opinion that life vests can actually get you killed in some situations by pinning you to the inside of a capsized kayak. Never been in that particular situation in white water, so I am not really sure, but I have spent my fair share of time fucking around in kayaks, including plenty of practical "jokes" with my brother.

In my 40 years of experience kayaking I would say that 9 times out of ten you fall out when you capsize.
