I am guessing nothing.
Anybody who took extensive mathematics courses in college eventually landed n a course titled Group Theory where typically one of the first lessons was how to apply group theory to solve this puzzle. It's a totally robotic exercise in implementing an algorithm once you learn it. The way he solves three cubes by juggling them is the more interesting feat, but that's more of a physical feat than intellectual feat.

Because he is a dumbass cop and he allowed this kid to psych him out, crash, and deliver a huge lawsuit in the kid's favor down the road. Although the kid did escape for a while.
