I don't think it's pretend, I think the GOP is a big tent, of which a very large cohort are genuinely Religious Right, and so within that paradigm, the leader of the party gives that cohort their due, nothing wrong with that, their due does not amount to Christian Sharia, but they get their time in the sun, which the Democrats would not give them, so, that's politics, who knew?

I'm no apologist for the religious right, and I think Smitty is spot on here.

In general, those that lean left are very quick to decide that those to their right don't actually believe in all their righty wrong-think.

Oh, I don't doubt that some kind of special religious hypocrite could get himself elected, whilst ignoring the entire point of the New Testament. It seems to happen with some regularity. But how many of the 110% of government figures bowing heads together at a prayer breakfast are actual Believers? It's Kabuki Theater on a grand scale, with a few genuine weirdos thrown in the mix.

It's not that they 'can't believe it' - it's that they can't believe it, and still end up as a corrupt-ass millionaire politician unless they're A) Full Of Shit, or B) Completely unaware of what their own religious text is telling them. And yet, for now, the elderly sheep keep lining up to pull that lever for Jayzus. It's a dying tumor on our riddled national body. I just wish it would go faster.

In fact, I probably would have agree'd with you, that I should have said "protectionist" instead, but that would have been a civil conversation about the terminology I was using, but we can't have that!
