I don't think it's pretend, I think the GOP is a big tent, of which a very large cohort are genuinely Religious Right, and so within that paradigm, the leader of the party gives that cohort their due, nothing wrong with that, their due does not amount to Christian Sharia, but they get their time in the sun, which the Democrats would not give them, so, that's politics, who knew?
