Arlington fire captain's daughter fatally shot by officer aiming at loose dog

Officials confirm the woman who was fatally shot Thursday by an Arlington officer who was aiming at a loose dog was the daughter of an Arlington fire captain.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner identified the woman as 30-year-old Margarita Brooks. The Arlington Fire Department confirmed on Friday that Books was the daughter of one of their fire captains.

Arlington police released a statement late Thursday night saying they were doing a welfare check around 5 p.m. after Brooks was apparently passed out in a grassy area near Canton Drive and North Collins Street Thursday afternoon.

Police said as an officer called out to Brooks and approached her, a loose dog was barking at him and began running towards him. Police say the officer fired several shots at the dog, and heard the woman scream and realized she'd been hit.

Brooks was rushed to the hospital and later died. She died from a gunshot wound to her upper body.

The dog was possibly grazed and was taken to an animal shelter to be checked out and be quarantined.

Police say the interaction was captured on body camera. They released the video Friday afternoon.

The officer's identity has not been released. Arlington police only said he is a 25-year-old Asian-American who joined the Arlington Police Department in 2012 as a detention officer. He graduated from the police academy in February 2019 and was released from field training on July 1.

The officer is on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. It will be up to a grand jury if he will face any charges.

He didn't even try to get an angle on the dog. Looks like a ricochet off the sidewalk got her. The dog did attack him, though.

The problem is the culture of the police that is fundamentally one of cowardice. They put their own lives first, before the people they volunteered to protect.

I am not saying this guy is like that. The bodycam footage seems to show he just used really, really bad judgment in how he handled the dog charging him. But most of the time these are stories of cops who don't want to take any chance with their own lives, which means they take chances with other people's lives. I find that dishonorable and cowardly, personally. But, again, in this case the cop just didn't seem to think through the ballistics and geometry of that encounter before pulling the trigger.

In general, if a dog charges anybody like we saw on there, and it's a dog that can realistically harm that person, I am not going to expect that person to get mauled rather than shoot the dog. Just don't shoot at the dog with a human being right there in the same trajectory. If you wouldn't shoot a target at a range with a person downrange like that, you shouldn't do it in real life if you can avoid it.

Nobody would tolerate wanton shooting at dogs by private security.

If a dog that sized attacks anybody I am okay with that person shooting the dog, private security or cop.

I am not okay with people firing with a human being right there along the trajectory of the bullets.
