Pournelle's Future History novels are a good example of religion in the future. The Empire of Man rules over all mankind and the unified Christian Church guides men's spiritual affairs. Great novels, by the way.

This would be more the opposite, the Empire of Man rules over science and commerce, religion is dead for all intents and purposes, until that is, the pioneers make contact with the Godhead, at which point, pilgims ensue once again, but the Godhead they find is next level, the miraculous is back, it's like the Monolith, it changes them, it unlocks the next level consciousness, one with the force and the force is with me.

Driving to my inlaws for Christmas Eve supper, I thought of my answer to Darth Vader; Nazgul in Space, a dead man's skeleton in the suit of armour, reanimated by God, as the avenging angel.

Vader is the ultimate triumph of the disabled and underprivileged only to be overcome by hateful terrorists who all come from privileged backgrounds. Princesses and whatnot could not deal with the fact that this son of a Tatooine slave girl rose up to command the emperor's galactic forces. So they revolted to maintain their privilege. They even went so far as to target his work program that created jobs for all the unemployed in the galaxy. They just fucking destroyed the entire thing and all the workers on it. Those workers were just trying to do jobs that nobody else would do.

Star Wars is technically a tragedy.
