Trump's upset would be nothing compared to McGregor beating Mayweather, not even in the same ball park of upset, completely different leagues. A McGregor victory would be a bigger upset than The Miracle On Ice, notably so, and it would make the Buster Douglas over Mike Tyson upset pale in comparison as well. The Patriots 25 point comeback against the Falcons in the Super Bowl, doesn't have shit on a possible McGregor upset over Mayweather. Matt Serra beating GSP isn't even half the upset that would be. It would be fucking monumental as all get out, it would honestly be one of the most epic moments in sports history if it actually happened.

How much chance does Tom Brady have vs LeBron at basketball?heydaralon wrote:Why doesn't McGregor have a chance?GrumpyCatFace wrote:One of the all-time great boxers is boxing an MMA fighter. Fair enough, fair enough. Do MMA fighters not do any boxing? I have no idea. If its really as cut and dry as you are making it, I don't understand how this fight could have even been organized in the first place. Very weird.GrumpyCatFace wrote:How much chance does Tom Brady have vs LeBron at basketball?heydaralon wrote:Why doesn't McGregor have a chance?GrumpyCatFace wrote:

Not really. Their entire sport is built around ground fighting. They're only standing for a tiny portion of the fight, and using their legs as well.heydaralon wrote:Fair enough, fair enough. All that said, I'd like to bet on McGregor going the distance. He's probably a lot tougher than Mayweather, and certainly has the motivation to do it.

It's all about the money. Conor is one of the best boxers in MMA, but that doesn't mean you can hang with the best boxer of a generation, in an actual boxing match. The age factor plays into it people thinking Conor has a chance too, McGregor being 11 years younger and as confident in his own abilities as it gets, while being able to communicate that confidence in crowd pleasing ways, is the big reason the betting public is getting silly. They are buying into Conor's bullshit, and Mayweather is all too happy to pretend like he isn't taking Conor seriously to play into that.heydaralon wrote:Fair enough, fair enough. Grumpycatface knows not of what he speaks. Most fights take place on the feet for the majority of the action in MMA. Conor McGregors boxing is the best part of his game in MMA, and he prefers to stand.GrumpyCatFace wrote:Not really. Their entire sport is built around ground fighting. Here is one of the finest examples of boxing you will see in an MMA context:
The four piece combo that drops Alvarez for the fourth time just before the finish, just masterful stuff, what fucking counter punching.

McGregor is, pretty much, a striker, but he can land blows in an MMA fight that he never would in a boxing match because MMA fighters have to constantly be on guard against kicks and shoots and the like. For instance, something McGregor often does is charge in really low, and then, at the last minute, twist into an upper cut. That kind of tactic isn't likely to work in a boxing match.heydaralon wrote:

I mean, he does have a chance... they don't call it a 'puncher's chance' for no reason.
Capps pretty much nails how and why the fight could be organized.
HAIL!

I won't pretend to be any sort of expert on McGregor himself, but I do know that's pretty damned atypical for MMA matches. Hoyce Gracie & co are not boxers.StCapps wrote:Grumpycatface knows not of what he speaks. Most fights take place on the feet for the majority of the action in MMA. Re: International sports bar
The Gracies are old news dude, MMA has moved beyond jiu-jitsu guys dominating the sport. Get with the times, in modern MMA metagame, striking is more important than grappling, because most dudes near the top of their divisions are too hard hold to hold down for lengthy amounts of time, and so it's unwise to base your entire strategy on keeping them on the ground all fight, because that just doesn't happen all that often, the Maia-Woodley fight is a perfect, if horribly boring example of that in action. These guys get back up after you take them down and then they kick your ass on feet, and every round starts on the feet, while takedowns get hard to come by. The grappling heavy fights are atypical these days, not the striking heavy fights.
Grappling specialists like Khabib Nurmagomedov, they are atypical in MMA, the sport is not filled with guys who are this good at holding people down, taking them back down when they get up, and making them pay the entire time and feel like trying to survive is futile, these kind of folks are outliers.
Bet that.
