Because we still like to pretend that we have some control over what happens in the world. That our government cares or listens to what we have to say. That it's relevant to be aware of what's happening.

That people are using some event to manipulate you, is not evidence that the event is not happening. Your news is not all made up bullshit, but your news is manipulative. For example, Sweden really does exist, and really did have an election. And your news reported on that. But it undoubtedly left some stuff out, depending on which channel/newspaper did the report. But the event itself, happened. Right now, the last stronghold of the Turkish-supported rebels + al Queda + some others are surrounded by Syrian (Assad) forces with their Iranian and Russian allies ready to attack. That's true, too. That's not "made up bullshit", either.

I've been down this rabbit hole before.
1) Why the fuck does the U.S. care if there's "poison gas" or "barrel bombs" but don't give a shit about drones shooting up weddings?
2) Assad (and Russia) can win without gas attacks.
3) Where is this poison gas hidden?
4) Israel wants the U.S. to go to war with Syria, and this has all the earmarks of Israeli manipulation. What? You think I can't recognize when America is being manipulated?

And what does "nuclear annihilation" have to do with it? Do you think if you don't parrot the lines coming out of RT and Sputniknews, that Russia will nuke you, or what are you saying?

I took the question to mean 'why do we care at all'.

We obviously can't trust any of the nonsense in our own media, so the natural impulse is to look for alternatives. If Russia is putting out a headline that contradicts what our media is telling us, you can expect us to lean towards it as 'the truth'. Obviously, that's not very helpful, but it is to be expected.

Current state of the US population: A small percentage that still buy in to the constant drivel coming from our televisions, and a larger percentage that actively look for alternatives and get misled by other state propaganda machines.
The silent majority is trying to tune out completely, but still gets yanked around by headlines, because they want to forsee coming disasters.
