Bottom line, when the adrenaline dump hits my blood, training and indoctrination is going to kick in, so might as well just go with the twenty years of conditioning, and close with and destroy, it's all a high risk gambit anyways, so duck and cover won't necessarily save you, rather than wading in slowly, seize the initiative, go for maximum speed, violence and aggression, shock effect.

Don't creep in, go in fast and keep movin' and shootin', hoppin' and poppin', that's the harder target; bang breach clear.

For load make ready under duress with ammo stored separately, that's where the shotgun comes in handy, 12 gauge pump, pocket full of shells.

Need to train for that tho, hand loading into the breach in double quick time.

In terms of CQC with a long gun? If they close up to that range; cave their skull in with the butt stroke.

You don't actually need a bayonet, stab them in the throat with the breacher muzzle, forehand smash, backhand smash, stomp them into a paste.

I figure a short-spear makes a decent home defense non-firearm weapon. Got a stabby part. Got a bashing part. Good reach.

If you're going CQC, it's not about what you're packing, at that range, you are the weapon, you'll either close with and destroy, or you wont, but creeping in ain't the way to go, for CQC, you gotta be explosive, and if you're explosive, you can use a kitchen knife, shank him to death before he even has a chance to think.

You're necessarily dead if he has a gun, for CQC, it's a burglar, not the SAS, if you ambush him, close with and destroy with maximum speed violence and aggression, unlikely he'll even get a shot off.
