It's like in Petawawa, the bears hang out at the dump, and most of the time they are docile, but once in awhile, there's a king bear in the bunch, so don't wander off too far from the truck.

On base, we used artillery simulators to scare them off, but that's a quarter stick of dynamite, so that is a very loud bang, and you can't buy an arty sim at Canadian Tire.

There was a guy in Muskoka who was taking a dump in the outhouse, black bear opened the door and dragged him out, his buddy went back into the cabin and got the shotgun, came back and shot the bear, when it had the guys head in its mouth.

We have areas in wilderness thick with Griz. During hunting season rifle shots are like ringing the dinner bell. The Griz have learned there is soon to be a steaming hot gut pile and maybe some elk meat. Hunters have to post lookouts, butcher and get the hell out of there.

If they lose a horse in the backcountry there are teams of folks that go in and dynamite the animal to prevent bears from creating problems along the trails.

BC Grizzly is the king of the brown bears, the only thing bigger and meaner is a polar.

BC Grizzly male, is a thousand pounds of bear.

And can run at almost 40 mph. Any tree it can't climb, it can knock down, there is literally no escape.

And they will follow you, relentlessly, for miles and miles, if they can't chase you down with speed, they will beat you with endurance.

I wonder if an alpha male sasquatch can beat one of those giant brown bears no problem.

My uncle is a helicopter pilot in BC, Vietnam vet, flew for the Air Cav, now he runs his own helicopter.

Would take me on flights just for fun, but one time he got a call where he needed all four seats, so he drops me off in a meadow on the top of a mountain, hands me the shotgun, says "I'll be back, but if a bear shows up, shoot first"
