You have said in the past that the American "missionary" ideology started with Franklin and Jefferson. In other words, it was with us from the start of this country. Dan Carlin has said that he thinks that it started after the Spanish American war and it really picked up After WW2. To me, it seems like we have always intervened regionally, but we were not terribly interested in becoming a global projector of power until at least the very end of the nineteenth century. There were instances of intervention like the Barbary pirates etc, but in our early days we tried avoiding a lot of foreign entanglements like the xyz affair.
