And the reason they hated the Catholic Church so much in those days was that the Catholic Church still upheld the truth and was explicitly a male-run organization. They did not give any leeway whatsoever to women who wanted to lead parish life like we see today. A 19th century priest would have ordered a husband to get control of his insane wife for doing the shit we see today in Catholic parishes.

When you let women dominate even the moral life of any community, you get endless stupid shit like Prohibition, police state, etc. It's really bad, man. Stop doing it.

It's crazy that we got to the point where there was so much pressure to enact this that Congress over road Woodrow Wilsons Veto. I have no love for Woody Wilson, HATE-28 is my motto, but he tried to do the right thing here.
This kind of organized single issue voting is the Achilles heel of Democracy. It can create huge imbalances of power from a relatively small group. Israel's problem with the ultra-religious parties is a great example, where anyone who tries to mess with their power and perks finds the bloc forming a government with their opposition. American party politics is more opaque about it's coalitions, but it's still there. However it seems rare that a group is as relentless and bipartisan as the ASL. They didn't care about your party as long you you supported their agenda.

The press loves single issues, they can put candidates and causes into one single tidy box.

The Tea Party and OWS were not single issue movements. They each has a list of at least 10 greivances, and a majority of issues in common. But the press distilled them into opposing movements, one Anti Gov, the other Anti Business.

That's true, but it's not just the press. Single issue and wedge issues WORK! They get low info voters to the polls. Nuanced positions are derided as morally compromised.
