Not 400 homeless.
400 semi-permanent homeless camps erected on public land in the city.
Seattle has 10,000+ homeless, some who have traveled across several states to get here.
I really have no idea how some of the neighbors can hold it together.

If the government just allowed tent city to be built next to my house, in defiance of their own laws, I would be furious.

I heard it my whole life from them, and to some extent my parents, who never had any details mind you, just a generic, "go to college so you won't be poor". Even now, there's a myth that a college degree makes you informed.

There is pushback. You got guys like Mike Rowe out there, he's on TV, on podcasts and the radio, and in the halls of congress, reminding everyone of that there is a whole nother world outside of college.
I think academia has a valuable place in any civilized society, but of course, it shouldn't be viewed as "the top" of society, the philosopher kings you speak of. But nor should professions, educations, trades, that focus only on producing some material, profitable, product.

There are also lots of job openings for people who must work for less than the profession would normally pay, because we subsidize companies so they can wait us out.

And despite all aforementioned free and subsidized education, training and support given, there is always some reason why you shouldn't even try.
Never give up. That said, free and subsidized is fairly limited. Most people these days are serfs. Makes them even more desperate for those low, low wages.

I agree and so I will mention that I don't think that the world of "real work" is somehow superior. There are virtues in both spheres, but the balance is wrong in the US.

You're not aware then. You can mostly definitely get through college, or tradeschool from financial aid, scholarships, and or subsidized and non-subsidized loans. It's completely possibly at any age.

You see the two-stage wizardry at work.

1. Blame Amazon and Microsoft - they drove up the housing prices by offering thousands of high paying positions in the Greater Seattle area. Obviously the sleeping-bag junkies would all have homes if there weren’t so many excellent paying jobs in the area.

2. Never blame the homeless for anything. See the grandma in the article -“It’s not entirely their fault,” Gebaroff said. That’s the conditioned populace of King County talking. The piles of discarded drug needles aren’t the drug users fault. See point #1.

Yet ... if a cop pulled me over and found heroin and needles in my truck, I suspect both he and this leftist grandma would say that it WAS entirely my fault. Because I don’t live in a tent and shit on driveways I guess.

If only there was a way to make housing cheaper....

https://www.nahbclassic.org/generic.asp ... nnelID=311
New NAHB estimates based on the latest data show that, on average, regulations imposed by government at all levels account for 24.3 percent of the final price of a new single-family home built
http://nahbnow.com/2016/05/regulations- ... me-prices/

https://e.infogram.com/58fa7bfb-9799-4d ... ?src=embed
Applying percentages from NAHB’s studies to Census data on new home prices during this five-year span shows that regulatory costs for an average single-family home went from $65,224 (2011) to $84,671 (2016) – a 29.8% increase.
Nah, fucking make the person building low income housing put fucking solar panels on the roof. Its for their own good after all.

http://fortune.com/2018/05/07/california-solar-mandate/
The mandate would make it $25,000 to $30,000 more expensive to build new homes than those built to the current code,

There are plenty of ag jobs open right now, paying record prices, if you're not above that sort of thing.

That’s if you qualify for subsidized or scholarships, and most don’t. I put one through 4 year and one through a trade school. We qualified for a massive $600 subsidized loan the year both kids were in. Both kids got some scholarship money, but it was a small percentage. Trust me, I made myself extremely aware.
