Sort of that, but with dividends starting immediately. It is the same logic as social security, but just acknowledging up front that you are firing up the printing presses to get there.GrumpyCatFace wrote:You mean Social Security?Hanarchy Montanarchy wrote:Just spit balling, but what would happen if, instead of just issuing currency, UBI was passed out as something like a mutual fund in municipal bonds. That way it doesn't all immediately circulate at the same rate, can be used for infrastructure, and makes everyone a shareholder with slower drip of funds for circulation. Some people could and would immediately cash out, which would carry a penalty.

Stop with the inflation-mongering! Who cares? Poor people don't care. People on SS don't care. People with jobs don't care. People in debt (the median CC debt in the U.S. is $55K!) don't care. The only people who care are The 1% because their vast wealth will be diminished in comparison.DBTrek wrote:I’d be more supportive if anyone could explain how you increase every individual’s money supply by $30k and prevent it from affecting prices.
Does anyone have an explanation on how you massively increase (money) supply of people participating in an economy with no effect on demand (goods)?
Seems like every time we reach this point things devolve into predictable political shibboleths and meaningless catch phrases.

Why not attempt the same thing from the demand side, and simply mandate all prices on everything be halved? Then everyone has twice as much money as they do now right?
Except that would drive most every business into bankruptcy.
Yet you all believe you can simply pull a massive supply-side increase and it will magically work out better. Nonsense. Deflation is as catastrophic for lenders as inflation is to borrowers.
There is no magic leftist fix for economic realities. No more than there’s a magic social fix for people with penises who insist we call them women. You can make up arbitrary rules and try to enforce them, but reality is going to trump your best intentions and greatest efforts every time.

Printing more money, devaluing the metal content in coinage, etc., causes inflation. It has been known for thousands of years.

The INFLATION! Shibboleth is strong in the Alt-Right. (How many times do I have to point out that $60 trillion has been printed since Reagan and no inflation.)

Population and productivity have been growing since Reagan.
No shock that the currency (symbolic representation of stored productivity) has also grown.

GDP has gown by less than 3% a year. Population has grown by less than 1% a year. Debt was half a $trillion in 1980 but is now in excess of $60 trillion (counting the Feds relatively new power to print money via Open Market Operations, Quantitative Easing and Off-book purchases of Treasuries). The math ain't working out for the supposition that normal growth dynamics prevent inflation.

Sure. But growth dynamics do explain why the situation isn’t remarkable or dire. Even accounting for this growth, $100 in 1980 is worth $297 today. So there’s your nearly 197.07% inflation, plus population and productivity growth dynamics.Martin Hash wrote:GDP has gown by less than 3% a year. Population has grown by less than 1% a year. How is the situation helped by speed-printing money and distributing it among the citizens for doing nothing?

All that money went to China in exchange for cheap consumer stuff. It won't cause inflation until the Chinese come to the US and start buying stuff with it.

If only the CPI was just meaningless, it would be bad enough. Thanks to the Bernankes of the world, CPI is much worse than that, it's manipulative and fraudulent.
