Re: The Secret Political Symbolism in The Wizard of Oz
To me the Wizard of Oz was always a metaphor for overcoming disruptive life events...
The cyclone hits... disrupting our world... and on the journey to recovery we must find allies and recover heart, mind and courage... all the while confronting the aspect of the self/other that remain a barrier to this... The Evil Witch....and the Narcissistic Oz... ways we defend ourself that often are projected onto the outside world...
At first the belief is that we need rescuing from the outside by a charismatic and powerful other....
But eventually we have the courage to face our core self (basic unmet needs) under narcissistic defences (denial, self aggrandizement) and confront the witch (primitive aggressive defences) and return to the world of safety from which we were estranged... recalling that we had the resources within us all along... and thus the journey is completed.
As for gold, silver, north and south... it all seems window dressing to the core archetypal story... but then I would think that wouldn't I.
