Not so sure there's much hindsight to it. Plenty of folks knew slavery was evil in 1861...
The Civil War was about more than just slavery. Slavery was just the narrative the North used to justify the slaughter.

We all know the victor writes history though.

Without slavery, the issues would have been resolved without mass war.

Slavery was the root.

Kelly is /ourguy.
Funny to have that line coming up from you. I thought only Saint Flynn was good and other generals were evil.

Anyway, it's telling that Kelly got so much flak for his statements.

I myself didn't find his remarks outrageous. Kelly's remarks rather told that he knew something about the Civil War. The reaction tells that the Civil War basically has gotten to be a punching bag for present politics. Hence any reference that there was something else than slavery involved is viewed as denial and the upholding of the lost cause, a disguise for racist views.

Of course, it's not about the civil war.

It's about the Church killings, the car attack and the tiny crowd of neonazi's touting "Jews won't replace us". All that has sparked the public discourse, not in any way interest on the US Civil War. The same reason why you have flags lowered and statues remove. People wouldn't give a damn if it a Church killing hadn't started this.
