Re: Political Definitions Are Changing
In my scenario, with "liberty" in the middle, and Collectivists & Libertarians on the Left & Right, I find it interesting that both extremes suffer under the delusion that people will "do the right thing" when the jackboot is lifted off their necks.

Democracies tend to self-destruct. The founders had a good idea in a severely limited republican government where enfranchisement was strictly limited, but we fucked that up pretty fast.
One lesson of history is that democracies are only somewhat stable when the electorate both pays the bills *and* musters out on the Campus Martius in times of war. The further you get from that, the worst things become, and more unstable.

Dan Carlin said that about democracy in his podcast about the Münster Rebellion.
"Democracy is like a potted plant. A rare indoor specimen that must be carefully watered etc."
The premise is that it's a social experiment particular to a specific set of circumstances. Of course he manages to ignore the cultural circumstances that gave rise to a more egalitarian society, namely Europeans, as opposed to your favorite "ruthless dictators" that fill up most of our history books concerning the last five thousand years from Near Asia.

Couldn't find it but I liked Dan's analogies so could be subliminal channeling of something he said.Nukedog wrote:Dan Carlin said that about democracy in his podcast about the Münster Rebellion.

Now I'm channeling Jordan Peterson, who says political ideology is genetic. There are two types: altruism & conscientiousness. Altruists are Lefties & Conscientious people are Righties. (Of course, I boiled it down Hash-like.)

Democracy and liberty are not the same thing tho, I would submit, the greatest threat to liberty, is in fact democracy.
