Liberal, the truest definition is this:

Middle English: via Old French from Latin liberalis, from liber ‘free (man).’ The original sense was ‘suitable for a free man,’ hence ‘suitable for a gentleman’

Which means... that Liberals used to believe that people were allowed to be free, to do what they wanted when they wanted as long as it was proper. IE: didn't cause issues for others, hence being a gentleman.

Or in lament terms, you were allowed to do whatever you wanted, as long as it didn't interfere, affect/effect or otherwise put your neighbor into a situation they didn't want to be in.
