Trains are actually not a bad way to travel if you don't need to have your own car where you end up. I get a lot of work done on the train when I take it to Philly or NY.

The main problem I see in this is that they are only building trains to nowhere.

See the CA train project for an example. The high speed part needs to be in the metro areas, not in the middle of farmland where you can drive 90 mph anyway.

I'm confused by this statement. High speed trains within a metro is a deadly proposition. The G forces alone required to get them up to speed in such a short period of time would kill everyone. High speed is only practical when it is going between metros (i.e. LA to SF). If I had the backing to make a serious proposal, I would be suggesting a high speed system that connects all the major metro areas in the US, then have slower state/region based networks. The system would basically be designed to mimic the Interstate and state highway systems.


As far as the issue that StA brought up in regards to rail crossings, ideally the system would rarely if ever actually be built on the ground. It should either be underground or elevated depending on the situation. Also, I agree, freight and passenger should be on separate rails if we are to do this correctly.
