Trains are actually not a bad way to travel if you don't need to have your own car where you end up. I get a lot of work done on the train when I take it to Philly or NY.

I rode on one from LA to Seattle. Beautiful country but it takes forever. Freight trains get the right of way apparently.

Can we just build a high speed train network?
The main problem I see in this is that they are only building trains to nowhere.

See the CA train project for an example. The high speed part needs to be in the metro areas, not in the middle of farmland where you can drive 90 mph anyway.
I'm confused by this statement. High speed trains within a metro is a deadly proposition. The G forces alone required to get them up to speed in such a short period of time would kill everyone. High speed is only practical when it is going between metros (i.e. LA to SF). If I had the backing to make a serious proposal, I would be suggesting a high speed system that connects all the major metro areas in the US, then have slower state/region based networks. The system would basically be designed to mimic the Interstate and state highway systems.

As far as the issue that StA brought up in regards to rail crossings, ideally the system would rarely if ever actually be built on the ground. It should either be underground or elevated depending on the situation. Also, I agree, freight and passenger should be on separate rails if we are to do this correctly.

If your enemy blows you up, you win.

What kind of speed are you talking about? Relativistic?

These things aren't going to be accelerating faster than a Top Fuel dragster, let alone speeds that will cause a deadly G load

And the pathetic part is us paying for it l, along with the TSA Sexcapades.
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

I'm a scaredy cat, but this "all fear, all the time, cause we're just gonna diiiiiiiieeee!" It's fucking insane. I want this TSA Kabuki Theater to go away as it's just a job program and propaganda tool.
