You're truly a moron.
Did the word kinetic throw you off or something? Solar sails? gravity capture? They're launching a projectile to alter another's course, not embarking upon a five year voyage to boldly split infinitives.
Sorry I mentioned it.

Yeah, don't worry about it. Big rock go boom and ok.Alexander PhiAlipson wrote:You're truly a moron.

This stuff I can get behind. We've been hit by catastrophic impacts before. Super volcanoes are also pretty scary. Yea the intervals are like thousands/millions of years but they do happen.Alexander PhiAlipson wrote:NASA unveils plan to test asteroid defense techniqueGrumpyCatFace wrote:I absolutely give a shit. It's an incoming asteroid that's going to fuck your world up.
But, given that governments and industry have zero motive to do what's required, I've accepted that it's inevitable. Therefore, the only rational response is to prepare my family as best I can, and say "fuck it".
I'm not interested in railing against the government, and certainly not going to go out of my way to save oil/plastic/energy, just to save an extra few seconds of productivity for FuckYou Inc. I'm taking on new skills, growing food, and teaching the kids to do the same, because that bomb is already falling, baby. Get ready, or get fucked.
I do take the time to alarm my fellow citizens, when possible, in hopes that they'll start preparing as well, but I could care less about how much carbon they emit. It means nothing, changes nothing, and will help nothing.

Welcome to the forum by the way. If you havent started stockpiling canned food you should. I dont have much food, but I do have a canoe that I will use to get around in the new Waterworld. If Dennis Hopper was still alive, I would have teamed up with him to help defeat costner and row his trireme oil tanker boat.tue4t wrote:This stuff I can get behind. No worries. If we get hit by a meteor that wipes out half of the world the survivors will be twice as wealthy. It will be a new gilded age according to the economic theories of GCF.

What is the value of food, when the supply is cut off? Shelter? Clean water?Hastur wrote:No worries. If we get hit by a meteor that wipes out half of the world the survivors will be twice as wealthy. It will be a new gilded age according to the economic theories of GCF.
It's a gilded age for someone controlling the local springs or bottling plant, yes.

This whole End Of Times scenario is ridiculous. At the very worst, it will be urbanites conflicting with the suburbanites, and people in the rural areas setting up tent cities & work-farms. There's plenty of police, and certainly plenty of guns, and lots of people who know how to use them. Leadership will pop up as needed. Like I've predicted before, there will be Internet but no imported fruit or clothes.GrumpyCatFace wrote:What is the value of food, when the supply is cut off? Shelter? I'd say, worst case, some coastal cities will need to build dams and enact policies that migrate development a bit further inland, a lot more vegetation will grow (forests get dense, biomass goes up), and the arctic ocean opens up to shipping and oil development. On the negative side.. you could see nations in Africa and Asia face food shortages as the arable land shifts. But others will get more arable land than before. Deserts will probably grow a little bit.
Other than that.. maybe we should worry about serious problems instead?

wouldn't it just be easier to use a large rocket to move the earth out of the asteroid's way? You wouldn't have to move the Earth too far, just a few miles and the asteroid would go right past it.
