I think what you're talking about what in wargaming is referd to as impetus. It is the tendency among certain elite troops to to independently take offensive initiatives.
Impetus is not the same as lack of discipline. It's about the willingness to fight.
The French loss at Agincourt was a lot due to the impetus knights.
During the American war for independence the British had a hard time figuring out how to fight the American irregular troops. They kept on fighting when conventional troops would have given up. Impetus again.
