Just got back from another trip at around midnight last night. Took a slightly different path on the way back than normal. Sadly watched as the grass, trees, and hills gave way to dirt, scrub, and desert. Saved more than a couple thousand bucks versus flying.

See the CA train project for an example. The high speed part needs to be in the metro areas, not in the middle of farmland where you can drive 90 mph anyway.

The trains used to be a lot faster a hundred years ago. But the rails got consolidated, and the passenger trains became federalized or owned by the cities. They have to share the rails with freight, and freight always has priority.
In the cities, if you look at the old schedules, the trains ran MUCH faster with more stops.
In my humble opinion, before we get into the business of high-speed commuter systems, we need to sort out the freight systems, and we need to have these things run on separate networks. For instance, we could build a cargo pipeline network for freight, and then overhaul the existing rail lines for (relatively) high speed. Between the cities, we can more likely straighten out the paths to make it possible, but a lot of civil engineering has to go into making that safe. Many of our rural crossings have no barriers at all. Just stop signs.
But just separating freight into it's own network would allow us to go back to speeds trains ran on a century ago. Which is significantly faster. That would be a huge advantage.
