I have absolutely no actual evidence that he is "former" MI6, that's entirely media fueled speculation as well, the media is invoking Christopher Steele as being "ex-MI6", but based on what? I've yet to see anything that is evidence of Chris Steele actually being a former MI6 officer, though I do see the unfounded claim being bandied about.

It's one of those things in the UK, which is often bullshit, same as "ex-SAS" getting bandied about, that needs to be verified, too many bogus claims about to take that at face value.

I'm searching for anything actually substantive, that shows that this guy actually was an MI6 intelligence officer, or even that he has claimed that he was an MI6 intelligence officer, but I can't find anything, it's all just unfounded media reports referencing other unfounded media reports, the low information media doing its usual churn, without actually doing any journalism.
