WHO is pointing out there exists no evidence that recovering and having antibodies actually confers immunity. We really need to figure that giant question mark the fuck out before almost anything else.
I will get your ip adress you son of a bitch!

I'll get it and then maybe you'll see why mocking first responders online isn't quite the sunday school picnic you thought it was. I've narrowed it down to East Coast based on the exif data and while loops. Using a stdio.h I am fairly certain you are in that region dipshit.

Some problems with antibody testing that are actually major problems with rebooting the parts of the economy currently shut down.

Pretty much. But we’re about to figure it out one way or the other.
If that is the case, then this "open up the economy" talk is going to become a huge problem, because that's not going to fucking happen if people just keep getting infected until they die.
What is the alternative?

There’s not enough land for 350m homesteaders here. Might as well go full Mad Max, if that’s the case.

I dunno. But if recovery does not grant lasting immunity, and we don't have either a vaccine or an effective treatment, we might have to reorganize how society works. Our current social and economic systems would be unable to sustain that kind of thing.

I am not the one claiming easy answers here because I am not infected with these silly ideologies.

The alternative is to be really bloody careful of a virus that has killed as many Americans in 2 months as the whole Vietnam war.
The economy has to reopen at some point but doing it during the peak of a pandemic is insane.
You have to ask what the true motivation is when people are demanding their right to do something so crazy.
For legal reasons, we are not threatening to destroy U.S. government property with our glorious medieval siege engine. But if we wanted to, we could. But we won’t. But we could.

When faced with a choice between catastrophes, you might as well choose the option that offers hope of recovery. Sort of an impossible choice.

I mean I get it... but our current over-leveraged society can’t handle being shut down. That’s really the only reason that this is an emergency. Infinite growth paradigm is broken.

I would argue that economy is downstream from most of our society continuing to exist.

I wouldn’t. We simply don’t have a society without the industrial-scale industries that make it possible. How do you support this population without a functioning supply chain and production and infrastructure?

Going beyond a few months of this, you need distraction and amusement, or people start to go absolutely insane. Those are also major industries involving millions of workers.

All of it (currently) built on an over-leveraged system that can’t support itself much longer, even without this pandemic happening.

Shit is about to get genuinely weird.

War game this situation out if we cannot become immune to this virus after recovery. Take the meat packing industry as just one example. Workers stand shoulder-to-shoulder each day processing meat so that we all can eat. Some percentage get infected because it is so dangerous. They fall out of work. Some of those workers die. The others recover and return to work after a month or two. Except this is a constant churn, with the workers who just returned to work getting reinfected and having to roll those dice again. Eventually they need more workers. How many Americans are going to volunteer for that after the death toll in those plants becomes too high? Probably none.

And that's an essential industry that we cannot possibly shut down right now. Next extend that to all the other industries out there that are not really important for anything other than adding to the overall economic activity. Should workers keep showing up to Legoland so that kids can have a good Saturday afternoon and risk getting reinfected for the third time and dying? Should parents send their kids there to possibly get infected?

In another example of how American society is simply incapable of dealing with this pandemic, we had workers at Amazon and Whole Foods protesting to get paid sick leave and basic PPE provided. Instead of just spending the money on those things, Bezos spent many millions crushing the organizers. So workers who got sick and couldn't get access to a fucking coronavirus test kit because the Trump administration put a clamp on them for so long had to show up to work lest they not pay rent and become homeless during a pandemic. He probably spent more money suppressing the protests than had he just given them paid sick leave and PPE. Again, those are essential businesses that we obviously cannot just shut down, and yet even there American citizens are seeing their lives discarded. How long do you suppose this can go on, especially if we don't even have immunity after recovery?

Lastly, consider what it means to reopen the economy. I keep reading statements by Trump and governors about how they have the authority to reopen the economy and I find it shocking they assume they even have the power to do this. They certainly had the power to shut it all down, but how exactly can they order businesses to open up and for consumers to expose themselves to risk? A governor can order all the gyms to open in Georgia, but does that mean every major gym franchise is going to take that risk? Maybe; maybe not. We will find out. But I would argue the governor of Georgia does not have the power to force them to open anything. He sure as shit has no power to absolve them of legal liability when their customers get sick and die.
