My own pet theory as to the reason why the marxist left continues with this PC tactic even though it obviously backfires now:

Marxism fails. Every time. There exists no good argument in defense of it, so the only "defense" they have left is to shutdown dissent by controlling language and trying to socially and economically punish anybody who dares to question it.

It's not necessarily a trait unique to them. Any political ideology that becomes indefensible likely has the remnant adherents trying to browbeat others into acquiescence in the last days of its ascendancy. But these marxists take the practice to a new level.

Marxists, your virtue signaling and PC attacks do NOT constitute arguments. If you can't be bothered to defend your position, or you pretend like it's not your position when it obviously is your position, then you lose the debate over minds. People can see right through you now. You guys are going to continue to lose big time in elections if you don't turn this around.
