You said your bag weighs 26 lbs dry, and when you add water and food, it goes up to 30 lbs. If you just ignored food, at most you are likely packing only a 64 ounce bottle of water.

One of the other fairly new additions to my bag that I frickin love are ZipTies !

They are awesome. Need to put a tarp up on a branch Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip
Someone has a pack strap or buckle breaking Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip
Need to build a quick cook frame or drying frame by the fire Ziiiiiiip

They are mere ounces, strong and best of all easy to work with at night or in the rain or in the wind. I keep a little bundle of like 12-14" ones with me. :D

When I say 30 lbs I mean 30 lbs... The bag equipment (including tent, backpack, and other materials) weighs 26lbs... water, food, brings it to 30 lbs...and I used to camp quite a bit when I was younger, I walk a few miles a day to and from work, so if I have to, I am sure I could do a slog if I had to, but realistically if I ever needed to do something like "bugout" I wouldn't be doing it fast and hard, I would be going slow and cautious... so speed on foot really wouldn't matter initially. After a safe distance, perhaps, but not at first.

Well, you are dead in most hypothetical scenarios. That's like maybe a 40 oz canteen of water? LOL. Try again.

This is especially true for you. You live in a large metropolitan area. You have a wife and son. You should be thinking in terms of gallons of potable water, man.
Water is critical. I have a life straw, I've used it, it's OK. But most the time I'm in the mountains and I just drink directly from the stream. As long as it's good clear moving water.

I'll tell you, one of the things I've learned from going hiking or camping with different people is that people that don't do it often are at least sore and are probably going to get hurt somehow. And someone will definitely get a burn if you have a fire. So in my small ruck, I dedicate on of large outside pouches to nothing but Meds and 1st Aid. Critical stuff to have.........
Lidocaine Burn ointment
Anti-Diahreal meds
Ibuprofen/Aspirin - whatever you prefer I have both
Benydryl
tourniquet
sam splint
Ace Bandage
Iodine, to name a few
I also take vitamins, which are a great supplement

This stuff is especially important when travelling with women and children in my experience, if for no other reason than my sanity. I'm telling you when a kid get's their finger burned and you can fix it, awesome, cause you don't have to listen to 'em whine about it.
You don't take away all the discomfort or pain, but it helps mentally a lot................ for everyone.
Yeah, I have a life straw too... good for emergencies... as for a burn kit, yup... I have two first aid kids with me, the one for my backpack... the other at home... the one at home is a more detailed but both have burn kits and also a kit to take care of small to medium size wounds... just in case.

Superglue is your friend there too.

I've spent way too much money on my stuff, but again I got the 4 weather ultra-light equipment... so, for what it is, it's worth it. Especially if it means I get home to my family in one piece.

You live in a city, man.

You don't need this type of gear to get home. Your get-home bag should look totally different.

I work in the city, I live out in the suburbs... if you think I'll be staying to the streets and roads you are insane.

You should take the fastest route home.

Everybody in that situation would think like you do. The woods would be the most dangerous place to be. Just get home as fast as you can. Go light and run.

If you are serious, then I would suggest you establish a running plan. Run at least three days per week and get your average distance up there. In your bag, pack running shoes with extra pairs of socks, energy bars, and plenty of water. Add a first aid kit with open wound kit. In fact, for water, you could go with a camelpak. Maybe add a poncho, tarp, some cordage.

You don't need much. You need to be fast. You can't buy fast. You can only train it.

If I am using a bugout bag, all forms of transportation are at a standstill, and all hell has broken loose. I am walking the same direction as route three, going towards the NH border... that is the fastest route. 30 miles, should take about a day to go... if I go slow, two if I play safe...

I planed this out a while back... if I had a choice, I'd get a bike and get home asap, but right now if walking is the fastest way, I go slow and steady.

Yeah, always keep them with you in your bags, you'd be amazed how versatile they are, especially if you get a larger one for handcuff use.
