To open boxes, cut retaining ties, cable organizers, get into my morning coffee bag... perhaps you can use your tongue since you think it's sharp enough, but us mortals use knives to do such things.

Most tech guys carry a knife - it's not unusual....

I was more probing to see if he was just pulling it out to show off, or keeping it on his desk "cause his pocket's too tight" or something. If it's only being used for opening boxes, then yeah, makes sense. I've seen a lot of tacticool knives used for that (for some reason).

No, it's not... you don't need to be a "manly man" to carry around a knife... you do it because of your job. I mean plumbers, HVAC, Electricians, I mean most entities out there carry knives when it comes to doing manual labor. IT is one of those few places where manual labor and a desk job collide.
