Seems similar to the people I know in the Blue ridge Mountains up and down the Shenandoah Valley. Same values really. The West and the Mountains in the East should join up.Speaker to Animals wrote:GloryofGreece wrote:I'd think they'd be on personal freedom, responsibility, and self-reliance. Alaska is pretty much pure Far West in terms of culture. They are in many ways more western than Montana.
That's the Far West.

Nah. Appalachians are more about community. Also lots of live and let live attitudes. It's different. Far West emerged partly out of Appalachian culture, but it's very different due to the geography and industry.

That's what I was getting at, all those hill folk from Appalachia to the Ozarks, from the Blue Ridge to the Allegheny are very much culturally similar.GloryofGreece wrote: Seems similar to the people I know in the Blue ridge Mountains up and down the Shenandoah Valley. Both cultures ultimately do not want to be messed with. Not by other citizens or the government or corporations etc. They want to be left a lone for the most part. And you can't really be a "cowboy" when you have a family. There are no real cowboys that settle down on a ranch. Anyway, that myth lives on through a lot of dudes in the Mountains on the West and the East. Guns and hunting is big as well. Both cultures you are way more likely to go to your neighbor for help than any institution, and both will get pissed if you upset their perceived "honor".

Combine Southland and Appalachia into one thing. Yankeeland and Midlands into another thing (with the Left Coast as a satellite state). Everything else gets combined into the Far West (Much of Texas and all of Alaska).
Tidewater doesn't really exist much any longer. Gets absorbed into the Southland. Though, everything around Washington D.C. is Yankeeland Central now because of colonization.

What was a specific difference between the "tidewater" culture and the Southland one, really?Speaker to Animals wrote:

There's basically three viable nations there. All have access to sea and major ports. All have plenty of natural resources. It's a good division.
