If given a choice or forced to decide, the hill folk of North Carolina are not going to side with the folks of Raleigh.
I don't think that's the case anymore.
Most Appalachians today seem to identify as southern. Indeed, you will see the rebel flag everywhere around these parts. I bet you could go deep into Kentucky and see the rebel flag everywhere too, and they joined with the Yankees in the last war.
More likely you would see broader regional areas. Appalachia and the Southland would be one big thing. Yankeeland, Midlands, and the Left Coast would all be the same thing. Far West would probably join up with the El Norte, possibly snagging Texas and Alaska too.
Realistically, there are only about three possible divisions that make any sense.
