The right doesn't have a monopoly on what is fake or valid around here. If you present a good argument, then they'll listen to it, if you post a stupid argument, they'll ridicule it. They don't always find the right balance, but they are trying to, some are more successful than others, but they aren't like SJW's and shouting down arguments just because they disagree with them. They entertain plenty of arguments that the left disagrees with, all the damn time, and they usually save fake news claims for actual fake news.

The righties on this forum simply aren't as mean as the lefties are portraying them in this thread. Suck it up buttercups, y'all are way too sensitive to any criticism or your worst critiques. Your worst critiques are nowhere near as well thought out as your best, and we aren't going to start treating your worst critiques like they are your best anytime soon, anymore than any rational person is going to start treating StA's imminent civil war as one his best anti-left critiques all of a sudden. That just isn't how it works, bad critiques get ridiculed, good critiques get dap, it's that simple.

I have simply noticed that this forum is calibrated to a very particular set of biases... which isn't even a criticism, as such. But, there are certain discussions that get almost totally decoupled from reality for anyone who has a different set of biases, and it is increasingly difficult to point that out without (and I use this word very intentionally) triggering the living shit out of a handful of posters. Typically, at this point the discussion crashes and burns. This rather predictable shut down mechanism is really what I am referring to... not leftness or rightness.

You would have to ask Penner and the rest of the left that wholeheartedly swallow whatever they put out. If they see it in NYT, or WaPo or snopes or politifact it must be absolutely true. There you go just being dishonest again.

You are 1000% right. There is absolutely no reason to accept WaPO or NYT as unquestioned truth. Just rejecting them wholesale without presenting an actual counter argument is the problem. It puts all of the burden on the poster with the source, since they have provided something which can be critiqued, where the criticism is almost impossible to address. I think it is fairly obvious that the reverse should be true.

If I remember the context right, addressing "Fake News" started by pointing out that there were articles that were intentional fabrications being presented as reliable by copying the formatting of news outlets. This wan't really meme-ified until the term Fake News was pealed off from that meaning and started being used as a blanket criticism of an entire media outlet.

These are very different uses of the term.

It was a meme from day 1. There literally is a conspiracy between media outlets and many papers ran coordinated stories with the term "fake news" on the same day.

Making a counter argument isn't a predictable shut down mechanism. Some people around here just get too easily discouraged when someone or some group doesn't agree with them. I see no actual attempts at shutting down discussion around here aside from some people on both sides fronting like the other side is trying to shut down rational discussion, and then using that as an excuse to personally stop discussing the topic with them as a "waste of their time".
