You have been so for 67 years now.

But when you have an armstice, the guns usually are silent (if it's a real armstice).

Nuclear deterence is really quite simple, there's only two options, there's countervalue and there's counterforce.

Countervalue is when you anihilate them right down to the wood in a massive retaliation.

Counterforce is when you preempt them and destroy their nuclear forces.

If you don't have one of those two things in effect, you don't have a nuclear deterent.

I don't buy that China and Russia would allow a massive retaliation with nuclear weapons against the North Koreans, and what the Chinese and Russians would allow, wouldn't actually scare the regime in Pyongyang.

It would certainly scare the people, but to the regime, they are totally expendable downrange.

Oh, and if you're thinking that the Russians and Chinese are worried about the North Koreans nuking them?

No, because Russia and China could massively retaliate.

It's only America who cannot massively retaliate, that is the real paradox, and the North Koreans know it.

We don't need nukes to do it, though.

Anything short of massive retaliation with nuclear weapons, does not scare the North Koreans, you bomb them like North Vietnam, big whoop, they'll hunker down and ride it out, just like North Vietnam did.

Yeah? How fucking many times have they done that??? I guess it's now in the several hundreds, with +20 incidents that could be argued that they were an act of war.

Have they killed US Servicemen? Like in the 80's. Or the 60's. Heck, back then during 1966-1969 there were 43 US servicemen killed By the North Koreans.

The list goes on and on. There have been hundreds, hundreds of incidents and basically
Yet, no escalation to war.

You see, Korea is a Place of tough words, but tepid escalation.

And there Mattis has done what he supposed to do. Stand By the Prez. What I really like is that Mattis went immediately to squash any ideas that he and Trump would have different thoughts or not on the same page on this. Now he may not be enthusiastic about everything that Trump does, but here one has to back up the President.

It's a bad comparison, though. We bombed the shit out of North Vietnam in an attempt to force them to seek more favorable terms. We only need to destroy the North Korean nuclear weapons program in this case. That doesn't require convincing them of anything. We just need to break shit.

You can't detroy it fast enough and surely enough with conventional weapons, it's dug in deep, you can't ensure that you got it, without the B61's, and you can't risk a counterforce, unless you're 100% sure you're going to get it, get it all, and on the first pass.

And talkimg about a counterforce is not a counterforce, and in the meantime, you have no countervalue option, which means they have hydrogen bombs over the CONUS, and you have no deterrent in place against that, and they know it.

I don't think tactical nukes in that limited case would set off the Russians or the Chinese. As long as their territory is not affected by fallout, it should be okay.

Where is this stuff dug in? Is it near their eastern shoreline?
