Yeah plus there are many pests and like mites locusts etc that can destroy an entire seasons harvest pretty rapidly. Shit my mom's side were farmers in TN and sometimes shit in their garden or fields would get hit with some bug and it would take them a bit of time to even figure out what the fuck it was and how to deal with it. During that time, you might lose the whole harvest. These are professional farmers too. Some amateur farmer would be fucked without a rubber. It would only take this happening once for you to basically starve. You can store grain for a lot longer if its dried, but then you gotta worry about mice and rats and bugs eating it in the barn. Logistically, there are many points of failure which is why most people don't farm anymore.Smitty-48 wrote:Well first of all, to have enough grain to last you, you'd have to own a sizable farm, and be a fuckin' farmer who knew what he was doing. And even if you do know what you're doing, grain goes bad all the time, farming is dodgy at the best of times, never mind some wannabe prepper who doesn't own a farm and has no clue what he's doing. So grain baron Grumpy is clearly a fantasy.
In terms of gold, even if it went up a 1000%, that's only $880,000 a kilo, so you're not going to be rich, assuming you are even sitting on one kilo right now, if you're just holding a few bars, that ain't got be enough, even at a 1000% increase, that's only $120,000 a bar, that's not wealthy by any means, considering it is an asset, not income.
And again, if you really had a good grain hustle going on, what is to stopped better armed neighbors or roving gangs from stealing it? To their credit, most preppers are armed, but I don't see GCF packing any serious heat. He would be a sitting duck in the suburbs too. Shit, if he had a really good year, some local corrupt out of work cops or national guards might just confiscate it under the pretense of using it to feed others in the city. If you have shit of value when the world ends, it either won't be valuable long, or it won't be yours long.
